Projects

The Master Plan
The Cannon Beach Conference Center updated its master plan several years ago. Construction of a new dining room and kitchen complex is the next major project. This follows the June 2009 completion of a dormitory for Ecola Bible School students and CBCC summer staff.
Why Next?
It was determined during the master planning process that the dining room and kitchen is not only the oldest building on campus, it’s too small, has an inadequate kitchen, and does not meet contemporary safety requirements. In 2011 we are at the beginning of a long process—phase one, the design phase. Then a lengthy approval phase, encompassing the preliminary work prior to actual construction phases will follow.
Mission and Vision
The modernizing of the dining room and kitchen fits well within CBCC’s mission statement. These areas are central to providing guests relaxation and spiritual renewal in our beautiful setting. CBCC’s vision, and practice, has been to carefully lay projects before the Lord moving forward as donors pray and support the project financially.
Deferred Maintenance
It has always been necessary following new construction to spend time catching up on facilities maintenance general upgrade projects. In 2009 we launched the Grounds Beautification project and in 2010 we began a far-reaching Interior Renovation project. Both are still receiving donations and will finish out as we draw nearer to the dining room and kitchen new construction.
Where Will It Be Located?
Master planning discussions place the new building near the existing main dining room and kitchen.
When Will Construction Begin?
CBCC is careful not to proceed on well-intentioned projects without God’s blessing. One test will be met as donors are led to give financially. Cash in hand should allow roofing and enclosing the building from weather. As the construction progresses, pledges, grants and donations continue to come in. Another test is to patiently let the city, county and state design, review and permit approval all run its course in an orderly manner. This is a reflection to the community of our values as a Christian organization. From past experience, this will take at least two years.
How Will Conferences Continue?
Construction will parallel serving guests. A part of the planning process that is just now beginning. If the new building will share some of the same footprint of the old, adequate methods will be employed so that conferences and retreats are not curtailed. For sure, the work areas will be busy and provide, what has always been during new construction, an exciting display of God’s work among his followers.
What New Kitchen Features?
In 2010 our kitchen prepared 377,500 meals. The kitchen services three dining rooms. Most modern food service facilities would have found accomplishing that, at the quality we require, difficult in our kitchen. The food preparation, cooking, bakery, storage and serving areas will be given adequate room and modern equipment. As well, the dishwashing, loading dock and recycle areas will be expanded and given easy street access.
Dining Room Features?
Modern dining rooms have higher ceilings, fewer obstacles and accommodate current audio visual requirements. The existing dining room dates from before Pacific View Lodge and the purchase of a motel. It will therefore need to be larger. For times when several groups and activities are happening, it will allow for dividing into several private areas. Comfortable, contemporary, possibly integrated overflow for the chapel will be an architectural feature for enhancing meeting space.
What Will It Cost?
The office and dormitory building cost $1.6 million in 2009. The Family Recreation Center required $4 million by the time landscaping was finished. It can be estimated that a building of this size and complexity will cost at least $5 million to complete.
Can I Give Now?
Yes, we have a dining room and kitchen designated fund. The account has begun to grow, and guests that donate receive giving receipts showing the appropriate designation.
Will Volunteers Be Needed?
CBCC recognizes the importance of Christians intimately involved in those things that show the world about Christ. With volunteers Cannon Beach Conference Center got its start, and with a coordinated use of volunteers the donated time and talents of God’s people continues. Though there are many restrictions and regulations on what volunteers can do in today’s world, the dining room and kitchen project will need the enthusiastic support of many volunteers.
