Project Diary-Update 14 – February 17, 2009

Progress on the new dorm project in the past month has been significant and exciting! I hope you have been following some of the video clips that Carl Sandeen, our Development Manager, has been taking and posting on our website under “What’s New”.  In the past month, on the second floor dorm area, the installation of plumbing, heating and electrical wiring was completed, sheetrock was installed and the walls have been sealed, primed and painted. Light weight concrete for sound deadening was poured. Doors have been installed and just this week the electricians were installing lights, plugs and cover plates. In the first floor office area, some re-routing of wiring and plumbing delayed some work a few weeks, but all the heating, plumbing and electrical wiring are installed, insulation put in and sheetrock hung. Sealing, priming and painting are taking place this week. Decisions on flooring and décor are in the works, and volunteers are building the bunk beds for the second floor dorm rooms.

Outside, all the walkways, sidewalks, stairways and curbs have been poured and are in place. A volunteer, Charlie Gray, has just finished putting in a natural rock retaining wall in front of the landscape area in the front of the building and soil for planting is being delivered.

With completion (or at least occupancy) scheduled for June 1, work still to complete over the next three months includes installing flooring, final trim out of plumbing and electrical, installation of cabinets, installing furnishings and window coverings, base and trim and ceilings. Outside, the elevator installation, landscaping, final painting of the exterior, paving the parking area and driveway and lots of trim and clean up are still to come. We’re thankful for the many great volunteers who have helped keep the project moving along at a steady pace.
