Project Diary-Update 15 – March 4, 2009

With the arrival of some good weather in Cannon Beach the past few weeks, some great progress has been made on the new dorm landscaping. The most recent video clip from Carl gives you an idea of where those landscape areas are around the building. Our landscape plan for this building and also the Recreation Center and Pacific View Lodge was done by Mark Hadley, a licensed landscape architect with W & H Pacific company of Portland. The City of Cannon Beach Design Review Board has always appreciated Mark’s designs when they have been submitted. The front planter area was bordered with natural rock and installed by Charlie Gray and several other volunteers. Planting areas on the north and south sides and the back are bordered by concrete curbing. The gravel parking area by the river will be marked off by railroad tie flower beds as required by the city codes. Much of the work on the securing soil, installing the railroad ties planters and planting the various plants, shrubs and trees is being done by our Grounds department, including Grounds Supervisor Bill Claflin and assistant Ross Lingenfelter, with some valuable help from volunteers.

It is encouraging to see the outside take shape even as the inside is moving along in a timely manner! Carpet installation is scheduled for mid-April and the elevator for early April. Cabinet installation, done by Lemons Millwork, is scheduled in the next two weeks.  Furniture for the dorms is being built and/or ordered and should arrive in late April/early May.

We’re also grateful to have received a check this week for $120,000 for the first payment on the grant approved by the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust. Another $60,000 will be available as the final funds to complete the project once we reach that point.
